Poems, Submission Call & a Quote

I keep starting blog posts and not finishing them, so I'm just going to share that I recently had 2 poems put out into the world:

You can read and watch a video of my poem, "I'm Supposed to Cry on Thursday" at The Screaming Sheep.

My poem, "We're All Born into this Purple Friday Night Chaos" is on page 21 of Peacheslitmag.

Lastly, you can read the most recent issue of Dirty Chai here: I'm super proud of the fiction in this issue.  The issue, in my opinion, is the best collection yet, but since I'm editing the fiction: READ ALL THE FICTION IT IS SO GOOD.

Also, Dirty Chai is open to submissions for Issue Six.  It is a themed issue: ATLAS/STRUCTURE.  Head here for more info.

Basically if I haven't been doing mom/family stuff- I've been doing art stuff.  Which doesn't leave much time for blog stuff.

Please forgive me?

I recently read "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lammot and would like to leave you with this quote,

“Writing and reading decrease our sense of isolation. They deepen and widen and expand our sense of life: they feed the soul. When writers make us shake our heads with the exactness of their prose and their truths, and even make us laugh about ourselves or life, our buoyancy is restored. We are given a shot at dancing with, or at least clapping along with, the absurdity of life, instead of being squashed by it over and over again. It's like singing on a boat during a terrible storm at sea. You can't stop the raging storm, but singing can change the hearts and spirits of the people who are together on that ship.”

NaNoWriMo 2014, Holler!

So, I am like 90% sure that last year I said I was not going to do NaNoWriMo this year... But, one can never speak in absolutes.  And, alas- I have just signed up to participate again!  I have an idea that must be written out-- so yes, why not NaNo?  Granted, the novel I wrote last year was total shit and I have done absolutely NOTHING with it- but whateva whateva.

Anyway, are any of you participating in NaNo?  If you are, can we be buddies?  I need all of the support I can get!  You can find me here!

Empath Lit / My Poem

Hey guys, I just wanted to send you over to Empath Lit where they recently published a poem of mine.

Empath Lit was started by Alexandra Naughton and Dianna Dragonetti,

"two survivors who wanted to curate a project by and for people who have been victimized, abused, silenced. Seeking poetry, prose, essay/memoir/accounts of experiences, and more formal/journalistic criticism/reviews. Reclaim your narrative. We want to support you."

Amazing, right?

This is an incredible project and I am grateful to be a part of it.  My work, "Father's Day Poem" does carry a trigger warning (re: sexual and child abuse) but I think it's important, now more than ever, to stop being ashamed of my story and to let people know that I am a survivor.  Terrible things happened to me but my life is not terrible.  I made it through the other end.  I was a victim, yes, but most importantly, I am a survivor.

For any of you who are dealing with abuse and need someone to talk to, I am here.  Please reach out via my contact page or DM me via Twitter @aziadupont.

In the words of Empath Lit, reclaim your narrative.

Follow Fest '14!

I participated in Melissa Maygrove's Follow Fest last year and it was an awesome way to connect with other writers.  When I found out she was hosting again, I had to jump on board!

Here's my info:

Name: Azia DuPont (pronounced like "Asia" - you know, the continent.  (But I wasn't named for the continent, I was named for the awesome 80's hair-band because that's somehow better.))

Fiction or nonfiction? BOTH. And poetry.

What genres do you write? Mostly realistic.

Are you published? I have an essay and some poetry published in some small presses-- but no chapbooks/novels are graced with my strange name ::le sigh::

Do you do anything in addition to writing?
I am the founder and co-editor for the ePub Dirty Chai: www.dirtychaimag.com // I am also available for CP & beta work.

Tell us a little about yourself.
Well, where to start? I am in the midst of my twenty-eighth year of life.  I am a wife and mother of three.  I am a Christian.  I am a BOOK NERD, holler!  I have been writing since I before I could write, seriously.  I've always had notebooks. I'd log all of my thoughts, ideas, things that inspired me, or, before words made any sense to me- I'd doodle and scribble errthang.  I work part-time at Barnes and Noble slangin' books because re: Book Nerd. I'm a coffee-junky.  (Did you know that B-Nobs employees get HALF-OFF the cafe ALL OF THE TIME?  I know, right?)  It's rare for me to not have coffee nearby.  At about 7pm, I just switch to decaf, followed by a glass of Pinot Noir.  (So, basically, by about the age of 45, I'm going to have freaking disgusting teeth.  HAWT.) I feel like I'm not really telling you anything about myself, but whatever, you're cool with it.  I can feel it.  (I like to think I'm really good at feeling feelings.)  I live in Iowa and I've found myself falling in love with it here.  (I know, I'm as surprised as you are.)  And, Margaret Atwood is my idol.  And Angelina Jolie.  And Kate Winslet.  A character that she brought to life, April Wheeler (Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates), is my alter-ego.

What are you reading right now?
I just finished The Reader by Bernard Schlink and it was freaking FANTASTIC.  And I've now started the memoir, Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls & am in LOVE.  (Also, both of the covers to the books are incredible.  Can my future book have a black & white cover pretty please?)

Which authors influenced you the most?
Style-wise?  Novelist, Richard Yates, the poet, Matthew Dickman, essayist, David Sedaris.  Inspirationally?  Margaret Atwood.  I WILL LOVE HER FOREVER.

Where can people connect with you?
Twitter @aziadupont

Do you have a newsletter?
No- I'm still just a wannabe!

Is there anything else you’d like us to know?
I'm willing to post cover reveals, love to help with CP and beta work.  I'm always on Twitter, so feel free to say hello!

LIKE BUBBLE WRAP

So, sometimes this strange little poet emerges from my brain or inner being or maybe just from my spleen and writes really weird stuff.  And then I have no idea what to do with it because I'm not a poet.  Typically I write CNF or Fiction.  Anyway, this results in me sending out my strange poem to a few small presses to see if anyone might think this weird little lie that I wrote is interesting enough to publish.  Most recently, Scapegoat Review published my poem LIKE BUBBLE WRAP in their Spring 2014 issue (alongside some seriously great poetry- I'm honored to share space with these writers!)  You can read this weird little poem of mine here.

IWSG- Post NaNo and a Reminder!

It's the first Wednesday of the month, which means it is time for Alex J. Cavanaugh's Insecure Writer's Support Group!

The purpose of IWSG is for those in the writing world to share their neuroses, fears, etc. OR to offer encouragement to one another.  It's fantastic.  And if you are a writer and you aren't a member of IWSG- I'd recommend getting linked up! Like yesterday!

Now onto my insecurities and a reminder:

It's post NaNo- so I'm sure many of you are feeling the writing hangover that comes with pounding out the majority of a manuscript in 30 days.  I blogged about my experience Monday; sharing my bittersweet feelings about NaNo and the story that emerged.  I'm not sure if I'll participate in NaNo again, because the quantity v. quality thing has been battling it out in my mind the last few days.  Regardless, I wrote a story much different from anything I've ever written and, I'm not sure what my next move should be.

Today, I want to remind you all to BE YOURSELF IN YOUR WRITING.  Embrace your personal voice!  I am struggling with this now.  I've always wanted to write serious stories, like Richard Yates.  But, I'm not Richard Yates.  I write light hearted so much better than I write heart-wrenching.  And, I enjoy the process so much more when I'm letting my freak-flag fly. This video by my former professor, and author, Geoff Herbach, sums it up perfectly (and also has a great writing exercise at the end) and I hope you enjoy it!

Bittersweet

Because I'm easily sidetracked lately, whenever you hear "Bittersweet" - do you instantly think "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve and the movie Cruel Intentions?

Oh, you don't?  Me either.......

Anyway- back to our regularly scheduled blog post:

I'm a NaNoWriMo winner!  This is the first time I've won, and I honestly didn't expect to win.  I kind of feel like I cheated, because I took a story that I had written the first couple chapters for back in August and then used that to create an outline of the entire plot (THE FIRST TIME I'VE EVER OUTLINED AND IT MAKES A REALLY, REALLY BIG DIFFERENCE- let me tell ya!) and then once November 1st hit, I started completely fresh and rewrote the entire story.

Well, once I hit 51k in words, I decided to stop and validate my novel before I forgot to do it (I updated my word count a total of like... 6 times the entire month... I'm really bad at creating new habits.  Whoops.)  I still had 4 chapters left roughly-- but I figured that I wouldn't get to writing for the rest of the weekend.  (Which was true, this is the first time I've been at my computer in almost three days.)

MY WORD COUNT WAS OVER 65K.  I was using a bootlegged version of Word and I'm not sure why it was so messed up on my word-count, but I realized on my drive back-up I was already at 65k- just didn't notice!

Do I feel like a bad-ass for not only writing 65 THOUSAND words in less than 30 days, as well as putting out Dirty Chai's inaguaral issue, creating a Thanksgiving feast, submitting a few poems to small presses that will be published in the spring, read Allegiant and 6 other novels, saw Catching Fire twice, all the while managing to keep my house clean, my children happy, fed and entertained, as well as growing a human?  Yes, I feel like a bad ass.

BUT, I wanted this WIP to be around 65k and now when I finally finish it- it's going to be way over word count.  AND- this draft is shit you guys.

It sucks.

I hate all of the character's names.  I hate the story itself-- I kind of wrote a Chick Lit NA story and I'm kind of embarrassed about it.  I know that there's a bit of pride in me, and maybe it's because the small writer circle I have in my real life all write really serious stuff, and here I am like LA LA CHICK LIT.  I don't know.

Plus, maybe just hormones?  I could definitely be hormonal.

So, winning NaNo is bittersweet.  I feel accomplished, but I feel I could've written a much better book.  I guess all that's left to do is finish it and go back and rewrite the shit out of it, right?

And for your reading "pleasure" a small excerpt:

The cool, fall Minneapolis air did wonders for our mood, for about 30 seconds.  Until we looked behind us and saw Dylan, Janel, Jessi and Mark heading our way.  We ducked into Muddy Waters and I tried desperately to concoct a plan that would insure that my friend’s sanity would be undoubtedly okay. Especially when they decided to join us inside.  And stuck around for the rest of the night.
Jessi was particularly fond of reminiscing about stories from Paris, and when they went to Spain for their honeymoon.  Could she be more obvious?  I lost count of how many drinks Amelia went through.
“Amelia, seriously, are you okay?” I guess it was a nice change of pace, for once she was the mess instead of me, but at the same time—I wasn’t ready to play babysitter.
“Yeah, what’s there to worry about?  Jill!  Let’s get some more tequila!” And like that, she was back at the bar.
The music was loud and the band was really good.  I noticed Tammy talking with the bassist, and realize that this must have been the reason she wanted to come.  Typically Tammy doesn’t suggest bands.
Between Jillian and Amelia’s tequila runs, Tammy making eyes with the band dude, and the cling-on couples, I’ve spent a surprising amount of time alone tonight.  I thought this night was supposed to help me forget that Josh and Brad were getting married.  This is total bullshit.  I look down and notice my martini is almost gone and head back to the bar.  I should be a little more drunk by now.  Wasn’t that the point?  To forget?  I’m remembering too much.  Josh’s face keeps flashing in my mind.  And then Brad’s.  I start to feel like I’m crawling out of my skin.
Walking up to the bar, some dreadlocked hipster hippie spin-dances into me and I trip and spill the remainder of my drink on a guy in a red flannel. “I am so sorry!  It was freaking Barb Marley’s fault.  She ran into me with her rasta-moves.”  I motion towards the girl who just sort of shrugs, but in an arrogant way.
“No problem.” Flannel shirt guy gives a shrug and a small chuckle, and then we both experience face recognition.
“Snack Pack Jack!” I say.  And, I feel happy to see him for some strange reason.  I like his shirt.
“Ah, yes.  Drunk girl with the gay boyfriend who cries a lot.”  He doesn’t seem as thrilled to see me.  In fact, he seems quite disinterested.
“My name is Tricia, pudding snack.  He’s actually Brad’s, fucking, he’s getting married!”  I try not to sound like such a spaz, but it doesn’t work.
Jack’s face softens but I sense his bewilderment, “Alright, Tricia.  How about you just call me Jack and we get you a cup of coffee?”
“Coffee?  Beat ya to it.  There’s espresso in the martini I spilled all over you, and I need another one.”  I hold my glass up to the bartender, “I’ll take another and let’s get something for my friend Jack here.”
I felt really clever with the "Barb Marley" crack.  I remember emailing my poet friend, Sarah and my Co-Editor Sam about it because I felt so hilarious.

I don't know.  Maybe this book will be something eventually.   Until then, I'll keep trucking.

Those of you that participated in NaNo- how did you do?

The FLU is All Up in My House + BE MY NANO BUDDY!

Holy cow, you guys.  It's Tuesday already?!  It still feels like Saturday to me.

My son has had the stomach flu since 4am on Sunday, and now my daughter has it as well.  I think I've been vomited on at least 10 times since Sunday.  I've somehow managed to not get sick myself, but I smell terrible and my house is a disaster.  My son wants to constantly be held-- and showers have become basically impossible.  Don't even get me started on dishes.

I'm just praying that my husband doesn't get sick.  That will just the cherry to top this -vomit-filled-week-sunday. Also, that they both feel better by Halloween!  Because to miss Halloween when you're a kid is just WRONG.  (And not fair to Mom, who would like to grub on all the free candy.)

On a more positive note, Friday is the first day of NaNoWriMo and I'm getting pretty excited for it!  I have never been a NaNo winner, so that's embarrassing.  But, it will make it that much cooler if I am this year!

I have no writing buddies as of yet- so if you're participating: ADD ME!  My user name is aziadupont -- super creative, right? ( I hate picking user names, what can I say?)  I'll need all the encouragement I can get.  I haven't been able to find the writing+Mom life balance that so many other author's have seemed to master.  I NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

Also happening in November: my beautiful first born turns 6!  I can't believe it!  Also,  DirtyChai's first issue will be available to the masses!  And- it's Thanksgiving!  I love to cook so I'm excited!  Hopefully November will start with a bang (and be flu-less!).  Here's to positive thoughts!

Follow Fest : Nice To Meet YOU!

One of my absolute favorite bloggers, Melissa Maygrove, has put together this Blogfest to help writers connect with one another!  (How super awesome is that?)  Her blog is one of my favorites (she tweeted about my "Wrangry" post and I almost died)-- she tells things like it is and *always* gives awesome tips and advice.  If you don't follow her- you should probably head over and get connected!

Now, onto answering the questions Melissa put together for us:

Name: Azia DuPont
Fiction or nonfiction? Mostly fiction, but I've had a few essays published.
What genres do you write?  I told myself for a long time that I wanted to write some "strong" literature, something like Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates.  I realized that my interpretation of strong was more heavy/depressing/dark stories and frankly, writing those stories took so much from my soul that it was impossible to finish anything that I started!  My current WIP is NA- Chick Lit and I'm loving every minute I spend on it.  I think I've found my comfort zone.  I realized that writing can be fun/not just exhausting.  (Which, though it is often both.)  But, I actually laugh sometimes when I'm writing and I love that.
Are you published? I have had work appear in a few small presses.  Some essays and poems.  But, I am still an unpublished author.
Do you do anything in addition to writing?  My friend Sam and I have started the e-pub DirtyChai and its inaugural issue is set for publication in November!  Besides that, I'm a full-time Mom to two beautiful kids, Eva (5) and Abram (1).
Where can people connect with you?
There are a few ways:
Blog : Hit "Follow" over there on Google friend connect *OR* click the BlogLovin' button!
Lot's of options!
Twitter:  @aziadupont
Also- my email is azia (dot) dupont (at) gmail (dot) com -- I love email so feel free to send a message anytime!

Is there anything else you’d like us to know?
I'm looking for CP's and just other writers who are in the beginning stages of their writing journey on the road to (hopeful) publication.  I'm looking to network and find a community.  I'd love to help celebrate your success and be there to pick you up on the days that seem tough!  Let's be friends!

WRANGRY

So, I set my alarm for 5am today so I could get up to write this scene that was in the back of my head since the following night.  (I've come to realize that if I work on my WIP anytime after bedtime, everything I write is shit.  I have to write in the mornings and afternoons.)  Well, Abram did not let that happen this morning-- and I explained my crabbiness to Garrett:

WHO CAN RELATE?

I'm now at the coffee-shop-- and I got out a bit of what I needed to.. but, my flow is off.  So, though my wranger has subsided for the most part-- there is a bit that is still lingering.

Write on, my blogging buddies, WRITE ON.

IWSG : Quiet Life = Quiet Writing

It's the first Wednesday of the month which means it's time to air my dirty laundry for Alex J Cavanaugh's Insecure Writer's Support Group! (And, boy is it perfect timing-- I need you guys! Desperately!)

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

Let's get started, shall we?
 ---
You hear countless times that in order to WRITE, one must LIVE.  Or, it has also been put that you WRITE what you LIVE.  If that is true, all I have to offer up is a giant sigh and a word the rhymes with duck.

Am I happy?  Oh hell yes!  My husband is not only incredibly intelligent, spiritually aware and a great (probably the number one coolest) father-- he is also really, really good looking.  Then, to top it off, my kids are not only hilarious-- but they have caused me little to no headaches (in regards to being sick, troublesome, etc.)

Do I still struggle with inner demons like no ones business?  Oh heck yes!  But, I'm a far cry from the emo-monster that used to write on azia said what?

Though joy and inner turmoil, while on the cusp of thirty, has it's certain charms -- I'm not really doing much outside of my small town living.  I wake up, play with my children, make and eat a little breakfast, drink a bit of coffee, read the bible, check emails, play with the kids, pick up the house a bit, get dressed, take the kids to (insert: park, library, swimming, for a walk, etc), eat/make lunch, play with the kids, lay Abram down for his nap, try to write or read- usually don't accomplish either, blah blah the rest of the day blah blah-- you get the idea.  Throw in a dinner or lunch here and there with a few of the friends I've made in town, MOPS obligations, and church-- and you basically live my life.

So what is there to write about!?  You see my conundrum.  I can't write these stories with adventurous characters if I'm always sitting on my patootie in my little German town.  I'm kind of, really, a lot, going super cuckoo clocks.

I've just been CRAVING something and I don't know what it is.  I feel like my writing has been so flat because of this!  I don't want to just write about a place on the West Coast, watching YouTube and Vimeo videos to get a feel for the culture-- I want to see it with my own two eyes-- Do I make sense?  Please tell me I make sense.  I'm desperate to make sense.

Sometimes I feel like I'm living through Google and that scares me.

Granted, I'm the happiest I've ever been-- and I do love the quiet that this town has to offer (plus the history around here is so interesting, and the town itself is very quaint with a great library and tons to offer a family in regards to community activities)-- but, what about my writing?

Maybe I just miss my close girlfriends... I've made a few deep connections here, but I have yet to find that camaraderie that I've had with my college girlfriends and my poet friend.  I think it's important to have social interactions that feed not only your soul/spirit -- but your creative endeavors.  My soul and my writing are so deeply connected that it's been difficult finding a balance/someone around here who understands.

Maybe it's all in my head, and my writing isn't as flat as I think it is-- but, boy, this quiet existence has sure made me overwhelming insecure in my writing abilities.

IWSG- No, Husband! You can't read my story!

It's the first Wednesday of the month-- which means it's time for Alex J. Cavanaugh's Insecure Writer's Support Group--

(I know I haven't been blogging lately-- but it's been too nice outside to make time to write AND blog!)

But, onto one of my many (infinite?) insecurities:

I can't, for the life of me, seem to allow my husband to read my stories.  I'm so afraid of his opinion more than anyone else-- Why is that?

I have a ton of CP's -- and he isn't one of them.  Why is it so hard for me to let him read my work?

Am I the only one experiencing this issue?  Gah!

Imitation & Perception

I've started writing a YA narrative based on someone who uses other people's "trademarks" to form her own identity.  Yes, she's a bit of a copy-cat/quite insecure.  Since beginning this story, I've found myself wrestling with the following questions:  How much of what we are is an imitation v. our originality?  What do those words mean?  Which aspects of "us" can we consider to be ours?

It is so complicated!

Someone I once knew proposed the question, "Am I Me?  Or am I everybody?"  How much of our personalities are a reflection of who we truly are, how much of it is a version of our desired projection, and how much of it is imitation of others personalities?

Is imitation truly the sincerest form of flattery?  I've tossed this idea back and forth in my mind recently and I'm not sure whether or not I agree with that commonly accepted phrase.

How do you/ would you feel if someone "imitated" you?  The entire concept is hard for me to understand/seems silly. But, through writing this story, I'm realizing I haven't spent a lot of time with these ideas/aspects of life, and the human response/awareness to it.

It's so incredibly easy nowadays to imitate anyone!  You name it- celebrities, friends, etc. there is a plethora of readily available information  that you can find on basically anyone thanks to social networking and the World Wide Web.

I know someone who "imitated" everything that her friend did-- this girl got the same piercings, started listening to the same music, reading the same books, started to blog like she did-- I mean, serious imitation was going on.  And, every time this girl made a new friend, she would take certain things about them and try to incorporate it into her own identity.  (Unfortunately for her, she even copied some people's bad habits and that  got her into a bit of trouble.)

I do think there is a fine line between acceptable imitation and theft of idenity.  (Obviously, identity theft.  That goes without saying, I would hope.)  But, theft of what?  Can you "steal" someones "look"?  I mean, you can't really copyright a piercing, that's a ludicrous thing to keep tabs on.  Same goes for any style, really.  Because, if you let your style be an identifying factor of who you are, then you aren't really being "you", you are fulfilling a role that people have expected you to play.  And, therefore- are you YOU or are you EVERYBODY?  (And we are back to that.)

So, what do you guys make of all of this?  Of imitation?  Perceived identity?  The Self?  I'm so interested in your thoughts.  Please tell me.

IWSG : Don't Change My Style!

This isn't my first rodeo with IWSG-- I participated on my old blog every month.  And, let me tell you-- this hop is amazing.  I've brought various insecurities and fears to the forefront and been overwhelmed with reassurance and understanding from so many different writers.  Thank you, Alex J. Cavanaugh for creating such an incredible way for writer's to network and support one another!

Now, onto the confession : My writing 'voice' seems hard to swallow.  What do I mean exactly?  Well, I'm going through notes/edits/suggestions from a CP and I'm realizing that a lot of the suggestions completely change my writing style : the way I wanted something to sound/be read.  I mean, when a page comes back almost fully marked with your sentences rearranged and a ton of words crossed out, you're kind of left thinking one word, and one word only:

Eva left her letter's like this on the fridge.  Yikes.
I don't have a ton of experience with CP's -- but I'm feeling a bit discouraged: if they can't "get" my voice, will anyone?  Does it mean that it sucks?  I don't want to suck.  But, I don't want to have to change my style completely just to get support/have people like it.  Isn't there a happy medium?  Just because one CP wants to change every single word in my WIP, does that mean they all will?

Help me!  I'm feeling a bit defeated.  Do you change everything that is suggested?  Or do you pick and choose?  And if so, how do you know what is valuable suggestions and what is able to be considered but not necessarily done?  Tell me!  Please!
